WeChat

There is an interesting article by Elaine Moore in the FT Weekend Magazine (9th March 2019) on WeChat. This App is ubiquitous in China where it is used for everything from social media to daily purchases and targeted promotion. It is now ITA’s main channel for communicating with school teachers and university librarians and being on WeChat is now essential for anyone interested in the China market and communicating with people in China, especially since WhatsApp, Facebook and Google are banned in China. WeChat owner Tencent has been trying to grow its international users, though as the article points out, given the anti-tech backlash and concern over data ownership, the opportunity for this may already have passed.
